Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China (ROC), is an island country located in East Asia, off the coast of mainland China. Its capital and largest city is Taipei. The official language is Mandarin Chinese and the currency is the New Taiwan dollar. The country has a population of around 23 million people.
Taiwan has a highly developed economy, with a strong focus on technology and manufacturing. It is one of the "Four Asian Tigers" - a group of economies known for their rapid industrialization and economic growth. Taiwan is also known for its contributions to global technology and for being a major exporter of electronic products, computer hardware and consumer electronics.
Taiwan has a multi-party democracy and a presidential representative democratic republic system of government. The country has a diverse culture, influenced by Chinese, Japanese, and Austronesian traditions. Taiwan is known for its night markets, traditional festivals, and delicious street food.
Despite Taiwan's political and economic success, it faces international challenges and diplomatic isolation. China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and many countries, under pressure from Beijing, do not officially recognize Taiwan as a sovereign state. The U.S. and a few other countries maintain unofficial relations with Taiwan but do not have formal diplomatic ties.
